Legends Are Forever

In the wake of yesterdays tragic death of Indy racer Dan Wheldon, I reflected  back to the day that I came within feet of legend Dale Earnhardt and captured this image of him waiting to race the clock during qualifying. This would end up being his last race in Sonoma before being killed at the Daytona 500 in 2001. By chance, I had an opportunity to spend the afternoon on pit row and had the time of my life burning through roll after roll of film. To this day, I distinctly remember smiling at the images entering my cameras viewfinder. Dale Earnhardt was my uncles hero and by default became one of mine. I remember how awful and surreal it was following the crash that took his life. Very similar to yesterdays Indy tragedy and its numbing aftermath. This photo has always been a sentimental favorite of mine and each time I look at it I smile knowing that legends never die.

It's In The Blood

Always a high energy show. Always a good dose of real country music involving drinking and drugging, being low down, and keeping true to yourself followed by a near-lethal dose of metal. Never for the faint of heart. Hank knows how to rock a house and leave you begging for more. He is a true rebel, a true misfit, and a true showman. Hell, its in his blood.

Scaring Crows And People On The Island

The dogs and I took a drive out to Sauvies Island to get some shots of a cornfield that I have been scouting out for the last couple of months. I have been waiting patiently for this damn corn to grow tall enough to capture the fall colors at night as the crops begin to blossom. The fertile island fields are stunning during the day. However, at night it is completely dark and its views are extremely limited. This field is across the road from a pump station and is illuminated by one lamp which offers an eerie view of this wall of corn. This may be the one of the only public lights on the south side of the island. Just a short distance away scarecrows line one side of the road creating a very spooky atmosphere scaring more than just the crows.

Love Hurts

The Jewel Of St. Johns

One night Matt, the mutts, and I hiked up a dark trail in the dead of winter to get a shot of The St. Johns Bridge in which we could look down upon it. The west side of the bridge rests against a ridge that is probably one of the only ways to get some height for the particular shot. Most other times of year the trees and foilage would obstruct some of the view. We waited for a string of traffic to head towards the west in order to get some light trails to give the shot a dramatic effect. This bridge is definitely a favorite of all of the bridges that inhabit Portland.

Full Circle

My grandfather connects on a pitch during a senior softball tournament in Medford, Oregon. One of the coolest parts about watching these games is the spirit that these fellas carry out onto the field with them. It is the same spirit that one can witness at any little league game. These guys spend their golden years of retirement playing a game in which that spirit has persevered. Full circle.

Night Folk

Walking up the stairwell to the Burnside Bridge after a walk along the Eastbank Esplanade in the wee hours of the morning. The lit stairwell was the intended shot but as the shutter was released a chance encounter with a homeless man making his way down to the river sets the scene to be a very eerie one. The rest of the walk home for that matter.
